Classroom Instruction:

  • Shears Selection

  • Comb Selection

  • Putting combs and cutters on the
  hand piece correctly

  • Shearing theory and technique
  (keeping bottom tooth down,
  keeping comb on skin, etc.)

  • In depth look into the 4 rules of
       shearing: know equipment, learn
       pattern, learn animal contour,
       repetition.

Laboratory:

  • Safe take-down and
      release techniques.

  • Shearing of animals.
Schedule:

  • 8:30am:  Check in
  • 9:00 - 9:30am:  Brief overview, paperwork, etc.
  • 9:30 - 10:45am:  Classroom seminars
  • 10:45 - 11:00am:  Break
  • 11:00 - 12:30pm:  Classroom seminars
  • 12:30 - 1:15pm:  Lunch
  • 1:15 - 4:30pm:  Laboratory/Shearing

Matt Best, of 'Best Shearing Services', will be holding an alpaca shearing clinic at UMass Amherst on March 29th, 2008!

Matt's goal in instructing this course is for you to gain enough knowledge about and experience with shearing to go home and shear your own alpacas!

The seminar fee for this extremely beneficial clinic is only $200 per person! This fee covers the costs for:
  • A shearing reference manual
  • Classroom and hands on instruction
  • Coffee and snacks which are to be provided during the break period
  • Lunch is also included in the price

Only 12 spots are available in each class so that attendees will get an opportunity to actually do some shearing.
